New Unique Harlem Venues Hold Own Against Chains

New Harlem Venues

So I'm going through photos I snapped this weekend of soon-to-open or recently opened venues, looking to pick a few to post on, and I notice that the number of new unique places, in comparison to new chain stores, really isn't as bad as what one might think. (Or even what I might think.)

Granted, I am not including shots of the new Starbucks in SoHa 118 on Frederick Douglass Boulevard, the new Starbucks on 125th St and Adam Clayton Powell, the new Dunkin Donuts on Frederick Douglass and 113th-ish, or the new Dunkin Donuts on Frederick Douglass and 124th-ish. However, as best as I can remember, only the Dunkin Donuts on Frederick Douglass and 124th-ish replaced a unique neighborhood joint (La Marmite, which relocated). The others mostly filled vacant space. (I think the Dunkin Donuts on 113th-ish replaced a Curves, which is kinda funny, as if people just gave up and went for the donuts anyway.)

Now we will soon have Cafe Latte filling vacant retail space on Lenox and 122nd-ish near Settipani and Louise's Family Restaurant, as well as SVNTN Below and Subway coming into virgin retail space near Tribal Spears on Frederick Douglass and 116th. Cafe Addis on 125th and Amsterdam is open, and the Ethiopian coffee is good. (Neighbors let us know that the food is not spiced to tradition, as they had to ask for salt to give it some flavor.)

LOL @ I think the Dunkin Donuts on 113th-ish replaced a Curves, which is kinda funny, as if people just gave up and went for the donuts anyway.

Honestly I don't mind chains, especially if, as you point out, there remains a healthy balance between chains and more unique local venues. Bring it on!

Cafe Addis has to be the best coffee in Harlem

I went looking for the soon to be opened Cafe Latte yesterday but couldnt find it in the general 122nd and Lenox area. anyone seen it?

What is SVNTN Below and where is it?

Also there is a Little Gym opening in the Dyer this fall.

Also, American Apparel opened this week on 125th.

Cafe Latte is actually on the western side of Lenox btw 119th and 120th. That's across the street from Settipani and one block down from Louise's. The furmeister gets confused sometimes.

By the way, there are three other commercial spaces becoming available on the Cafe Latte block, so it will be interesting to see what goes into each. As always, I'm still waiting to see what will come of the old Emperor's Roe location. In my opinion, it's one of the best potential restaurant locations in all of Harlem. With 5th on the Park getting closer to dumping hundreds of people a mere block away, I don't understand why there isn't more activity in that space. I believe that Emperor's Roe had some difficulty establishing a kitchen in the space, so maybe that's the reason.

Also, I spoke to a women in June who is planning on opening a cafe in the ground level of the building on the SW corner of either 122nd or 123rd.

I always foresaw Lenox as a great restaurant avenue, with its huge sidewalks for outside dining and stunning architecture, maybe with the new ‘5th on the park’ condo this will be the reality.

Also - I think there is a Nick store opening on 116th and Lenox. Anyone know anything about that??

oops - meant Nike

Does anyone know what MOJO - located at the corner of 119th and St. Nick - will be? The floral-inspired facade looks really cool. Maybe a cafe?

Hmmm... It's funny... I lived in this neighborhood where the new subways and lounges and all... And this area has changed a lot... I even moved into one of the new developments here because i couldn't bare to continue to live where i was living before.. Anyways...

Svntn Below is a restaurant/bar.. I believe it's more leaning towards the jazzy field... Located on 8th ave/Fredrick Douglas Blvd between 117th and 118th street on the west side of FDB.

Then of course this whole starbucks thing and dunkin donuts... I find it strange to even have one above 110th street... Well maybe not dunkin donuts but starbucks - yes. Beats me.. This comes to show how much this neighborhood is going through gentrification.. Oh what has these influences come down to?

I would imagine having retail space @ 111 Central Park North and 110th would be an ideal location for Starbucks. They would get all the traffic from the rink in the winter and the Meer. botanical garden, and pool the rest of the year.

For those of us who've been praying for a decent Thai restaurant to open up in the neighborhood (and you know who you are!) -- we're still waiting. In the meantime, it's now possible to order takeout from a new place that recenty opened up on Amsterdam between 107th and 108th called Wondee Siam V. Although I haven't eaten at their other locations, this place is very good, and has some great specials at a really good price point. In fact, it's just as good as the place across the street from it, Thai Market. The big difference is this: Wondee Siam delivers here. The co-owner was very interested to learn that there's already pent up demand in this neighborhood and that soon there'll be a few hundered more people around when Fifth on the Park finally opens. So check it out. Who knows? Maybe he'll decide to open Wondee Siam VI down this way.
