Reader Q: Is Morningside Park Safe at Night for a Woman?
A reader writes:
I have a potential roommate who was advised by a Columbia student living on Morningside Drive never to go into the park alone at night. I've personally never had any trouble, but I was wondering if anyone else has had a different experience. Please chime in. I don't want to tell her it's safe if it isn't! Thanks.
It's difficult to think that any place the Paper Bag Players have recently performed could cause any harm other than side splitting laughter. A previous roommate walked the park late at night for about two years with no problems, funny or otherwise. (And no, he is not the guy in the pink shirt.) But things are different for men than women when it comes to safety.
Any thoughts out there will be appreciated.

Um, commonsense dictates. Personally, I grew up a major metropolitan city and learned to NEVER walk in ANY park after dark. I don't care is the park is located in Cornhusk, Iowa, you won't find me there after the sun goes down. There is a reason most parks have posted closing times -- usually at dusk. I just finished watching "The Brave One" starring Jodie Foster. Let that be the case scenario for the worst that could happen.

I gotta agree. as a woman, i generally follow the "no parks after dark" rule. i know morningside is a nice short cut, but it's not such a big park that you cant walk around. having said that, it's a pretty safe park, and a relatively safe neighborhood on both sides.
