Sushi Comes To Harlem
Okay, I know that other places may have served sushi around here, but as far as I know, Charlie's Place on Madison between 125th and 126th is the first regular sushi joint in the area. By regular I mean one can run in after work and pick up a $4 tuna or spicy salmon roll to go.
I find this to be a pretty significant entry on the central Harlem food scene. Myself and many others have long complained that options for quick take out, the kind one is looking for on a weekday evening when getting home, usually lean heavy on the unhealthy side. As I understand it, normal Chinese takeout is worse calorie and fat wise than McDonalds, and normal Chinese takeout is about it for quick delivery in central Harlem. (I do champion the Boar's Head sandwiches at the deli on 116th and Lenox as a quick and not unhealthy choice, but one can only do that so many times.) Charlie's Place does offer some of the fried options, including fried fish and chicken, as well as teriyaki, but they do have the sushi, and at normal prices.
Cheryl and I tried the sushi, her the spicy eel and me the spicy salmon, and were quite satisfied. (The photo of the sushi to go section was taken near the end of the day- it had a much better selection earlier on.)
The only complaint I do have is about the current hours. Charlie's is open from 11:30am to 8:00pm. I can understand sushi not being fare many would consider for breakfast, but I was looking forward to a new option for when I get home late. Eight o'clock is too early. I did talk to two of the employees about any plans to push the close time back, but they don't think any changes on that front will be happening son.
They do deliver, and the number is: 212-410-0277.

'bout time! I was wondering when we would get one. A neighborhood is properly gentrified until we have at least one sushi joint. We could have 10 Starbuck's but if there's no sushi then it doesn't matter. From the look of the stock at the end of the day, they must be doing fine so far.

They are probably closing at 8 because they want to get home before the bullets start flying in the area from the project people. The area will not be properly gentrified unless these massive projects are destroyed! They are not helping ANYONE!!!

This place is right down the street from us. Dinners and sushi are good but the hours really do suck. Surprising since a place that stayed open later would really do well around here.

How can a place stay open late when that is the time when the gangs of people from the projects are just starting to wake up to cause trouble? Do you want the sushi place to get robbed and then closed down??? GET RID OF THE PROJECTS!!!!

I found the prices to be a little on the high side, considering the portions.
However, the Korean people inside are very nice, although a little bit funny considering how hard they try to sound Japanese.

First off, F**K all of YOU PEOPLE who say the projects is bringing the neighborhood down. The projects IS the neighborhood. My grandmother lives in that projects and I grew up in that projects. If you don't like the people that live in a neighborhood DON'T LIVE THERE!!
I am definitely educated and my grandmother did a hell of a job making sure I became an intellectually efficient, well rounded, AFRO-AMERICAN WOMAN who loves where she comes from and the GOOD folks that surround(ed) her.
Everywhere in NYC has good, mediocre, and poor qualities.
All of you folks who move to Harlem and don't like the community are contributing to the gentrification of MY COMMUNITY. If you didn't know you actually make it harder for any of the PEOPLE that live there to move out of the projects you so loathe.
Furthermore, the real question is WHY DID YOU MOVE THERE?
(either to take advantage of lower costing rentals or b/c you want to feel like you are able to live among us Afro-AMERICANS)
Stop fronting and go back to midtown!
I like Charlies and will continue to frequent there. I will also continue to go in the evening and CHILL with my family and friends in MY COMMUNITY and eat sushi because thats what we like to do and we are not afraid to be around OUR PEOPLE!
