This is SOOO wonderful to see up here, but they better be careful that they don't get robbed as they are pedalling past the projects! SHUT DOWN THOSE PROJECTS!!!!!

holy crap!!!! what can we do to get rid of projects man???? OUT OF CONTROL!!!!

having said that-i have seen these things riding around and always wondered where they were picking people up from. are they just rolling up to other open houses and stealing their clients??? genius.

Well, please tell me what you think the best approach is to shut these projects down or move half of them somewhere else! There is no reason why this neighborhood should have this many projects compared to other neighborhoods! These pedi-cabs can ride around the neighborhood all they want, but people are not going to see a big bank for their buck until these projects are gone!

Do the projects look like a big ass sandwich to you? What the fuck is it about the projects you do not like? It must be the blacks, latinos, rehabbed whites who pass for spanish and the fat white chick you white dudes ignored in college who hooked up with the black guy from the gym who live there. Wow! relentless but understandable. Rickshaws in Harlem? Smart to have bike ones-harder to catch. Smart marketing to remind future buyers of a time of personal service-black caddies, Chinese rickshaws on foot in British controlled China - all designed to trigger that felling of superiority, privilege and entitlement in the new settler in Harlem. The next thing is to privatize Marcus Garvey Park-oh wait can’t have the new Harlemites speak the name of such a pro African man-back to Mount Morris park-more palatable. It gets dark after 8pm in the summer-pedal fast!

The projects look like one BIG mess to me. It is a breeding ground for crime and self destruction. There are amazing stories about successful people who came from the projects , however for the most part the projects are holding people back , not moving them forward. How can people on a whole expect to do better when they are living in drab, dingy high rise jails????? When the hopeless poor people have better quality of housing and are spread out amongst the working poor , they themselves will want to do better. If not, they will suffer and WE ALL WILL SUFFER!!!

SURE...we can shut down the projects. Why don't we start an initiative to take the residents of these projects and move them to your home town...right to the house next door to where you hrew up and have them live next door to your parents and relatives? Because let's be really honest here, what you are actually complaining about is all of the black people and latino people and their culture, so what you really would like to get rid of is them...not the buildings they live in. Get a grip, admit you are a racist biggot, and move to another neighborhood that is not historically ethnic (yep, I have a feeling that you would be complaining about ANY ethnicity that wasn't conformed to your liking). The problem is, they probably wouldn't have you in that kind of neighborhood.

well, let's not make too many assumptions here. I am black myself and if you think that the projects represent black and latino culture then I think that you need to re-examine exactly what black and latino culture is..... The projects are only holding back the blacks and latinos that live there , not helping them to move forward. That is why the projects need to go!

Wow - great post by getridoftheprojects. I agree - they don't "represent" any culture except that of the downtrodden and economically depressed - and there's no color wall on that category.

Bottom line is - when people grow up in a culture of poverty, it's hard for them to find a way out. When folks grow up in a rich ghetto, it can be hard for them to relate to failure (on a social scale) and poverty.

The best solution I've seen is mixed use housing, where the rich kids and the poor kids can play together and learn from each other. Hopefully, the rich kids will learn some humility and the poor kids will realize that it doesn't have to be just one way or another.

The huge blocks of high-rise, low income housing just feeds on that sense of purposelessness and inhumanity. I say, bulldoze the lot of them! They are hideous! Sell the land to developers in exchange for some quality mixed use housing that includes gardens and other public amenities to encourage folks to mix it up a lot. The towers are a symbol of the failed policies of the 1970s. Knock em down and let private interests take over - with a strong leash to make sure they fulfill their obligations to the poor.

Go lower rise - lower density and people will live better. You might even consider selling the apartments to the current owners in some situations, for a small amount of $$ - people treat their homes differently when they own them.

Just an idea - like congestion pricing - correct, but perhaps ahead of its time.
