Uptown Myth Tells Of Aphrodite Customers Bothered, Not Hot
Greek mythology has it that Aphrodite was born of the water after Cronus cut off Uranus' testicles and threw them into the sea. Ouch.
The myth of the love god's origin is unsettling, but not nearly as unsettling as the growing lore around the new uptown Aphrodite cleaners.
First, scattered accounts of less than divine experiences with the shops began arising via the comments section in previous posts. Whether it was ruining clothing and then overcharging or returning an order 17 pounds lighter, the stories were not good.
Then the oral histories began. My neighbor caught me in our lobby and explained to me how he was charged more than triple the estimate for a single item at Aphrodite. My neighbor, who was very recently a Marine sniper, effectively communicates when he is not pleased.
Now, via an email this evening, we have our first cannon work, a tale of a whole building's problems with the place:
Aphrodite Cleaners agreed to pick up and deliver our dry cleaning for our residential building. They agreed to come every week to collect and drop off our clothes. On February 8th, Aphrodite picked up our cleaning and was supposed to return them on February 15th, but we did not receive a drop off. When we did not receive a pick up or drop off on February 22nd, I called the store and asked them to drop off and pick up on the next day, which they did. When they delivered on February 23rd, they only delivered a portion of the load; they did not have any of my husband's dress shirts, which was odd, because if anything is in the load, it's my husband's dress shirts! After nearly two weeks of calling and receiving promises of calls back from the manager, Fatima, to no avail, my husband visited the store on Saturday, March 3rd. On Saturday, Fatima spoke with my husband and promised to look through their factory for his shirts and she would call us on Wednesday, March 7th. Today is Thursday, March 8th and we have not heard from Fatima. If we do not hear from them by this weekend, we will be placing a call to their corporate office and the Better Business Bureau! This is an alert to your readers...BUYERS BEWARE!
Wow.
Does anyone else have an Aphrodite story to tell?

I've used Aphropdite's on Lenox btw 118 & 119, but I greatly prefer the cleaners (Mr. Yin's perhaps?) two blocks north.

Aphrodite seemed a little overpriced compared to the other cleaners in the neighborhood, even with their 20% grand opening special. Perhaps by organic they mean they recycle the clothes that are brought into their stores. Too many horror stories and I have difficulty comprehending what "organic" dry cleaning means. I could air out my clothes and that is about as organic as it gets.

Wow!!! I will think twice before I go there. I never really thought about how much trust is required when you send your clothes to the cleaners. At any given time, they have between 500 and 1500 dollars worth of my clothes.

We also have had issues with Aphrodite at that location (late delivery - sometimes up to TWO WEEKS LATE, and not receiving everything at once, etc.). Problem is that there are no other real options for a Midtown professional living in Harlem (i.e. I need somebody who is willing to pick up and deliver). Anybody know of other options? Yin apparently does not have pickup/delivery and neither does the guy on 125th bwtn 5th and Madison.

I thought I would keep this thread alive by updating you all the status of our claim. I've been out of town for a bit, so I thought I would let it simmer on their side, since they were supposed to get back to us last Wednesday. I hope to report that this issue has resolved to our satisfaction. I would like everyone to think about how much they trust their cleaners...send a suit and and a few shirts and your cleaners is holding about 1,000 of your stuff...think about it.

Interesting update...heard that one of our neighbors is missing some of their clothes they sent to Aphrodite. Stay tuned. Don't want to accuse them of losing them prematurely.
I've been out of town since I last spoke to Fatima...still haven't heard from her, she has my wife's mobile # and we've heard nothing. When I spoke to her, I threatened to stand in front of her store with a sign saying..."This store has lost my clothes and will not return my phone calls!" I'm not ruling out doing so, but this is a good venue to let them know this won't die.
It will be great when I can report that Aphrodite has paid me for their mishandling of my clothes.

Progress???? Marcos, the district manager called my wife today promising to get this resolved. Seems that Fatima the store manager was the log jam. Thanks to a courageous employee at the store, Marcos was alerted to the problem. We'll see what happens.
I really hope this gets resolved, b/c they actually did a good job cleaning the clothes that they returned to me.

Make sure you let us know how this turns out, so we can decide if we will send our clothes there. It sounds like they may have some management problems which could be fixed.

No return phone call from Marcos...as a show of solidarity, the owners in my building have agreed to boycott if they don't make good. I have a pile of dry cleaning stacking up...at some point, I'm going to need figure out a resolution.

Update:
I decided that I needed to dial up the heat. So I faxed a letter to the CEO of Aphrodite Cleaners and copied Marcos. Marcos promptly called my wife back and agreed to handle this immediately. He said policy is to reimburse customers 10X the price to clean the garment. As an example...a shirt costs $2 to clean...they would reimburse me $20. Which pretty much sucks if you happen to own $100 shirts. Marcos agreed that this situation merits a different outcome and is going to submit to his insurance company.
I've spent more time documenting this nonsense than they have trying to find my shirts...that's the real shame in this. He's asking me to find credit card receipts/statements to prove my shirts are valued as I have said they are...more time on my side.
So let this be a cautionary tale to those who wear expensive garments. You send your $1,000 suit to the cleaners and pay $15 to get it cleaned. The cleaners lose/damage the garment and offer you $150 to make good. Doesn't hardily seem fair does it?

Aphrodite's started w/ good intro rates , but now the Drycleaning for pants is $6.00 (!). I don't even want to tell you the story of how their last Tailor left the Right Leg of my suit pants longer than the Left, and when I pointed this out, he started screaming at me. He then "Repaired" the pants (after insisting that he had not made a mistake, but rather that my legs are two different lengths!) by making the Left longer than the right- He also charged $26. to hem them, which is also usurious.
We Badly need a good cleaner in W. Harlem!

Finally - Two weeks ago we heard from the cleaners saying they had found my dry cleaning! There was no apology, no call from Marcos, no call from Fatima...nothing. The shining piece of this story was Isabel, the clerk at the store. She diligently passed on all the messages and escalated the issue to Marcos when are phone calls were being ignored by Fatima.
Aphrodite Dry cleaners should be ashamed of theirselves...

I'm sorry I forgot to mention that we received a meager 20% discount on two orders of dry cleaning. Still pitiful for the anguish of losing 9 of my shirts for more than a month.

The Aphrodite Organic Cleaners on W. 113th Street and 8th Avenuen is not listed downtown in the department of regisrty. I checked, prior to filing my Small Claims Court suit. The workers don't speak English. You MUST wait unitl they get off their personal phone call or they try to service you while you're interrupting their call. Fatima, the supposed manager, refuses to speak with you. Just take your Aphrodite damged clothes and leave the store immediately. We the true Harlem born folks must check these new commers to our community. Black does not mean ignorant. What!

I am LIVID and I refuse to let this one alone, even on my day off. I just got off the phone with our famous Marcos (funny thing how they all refuse to give out their full names). I sent my silk confider to get cleaned at the 117th store. It was done incorrectly the first time. The second time they ruined it. I’ve been with them back-and-forth for a month now only to still be taken around in circles and dismissed with the threat to “take them to small claims court”. $300.00 (three hundred dollars and zero cents) may not be worth it for many but for me the added cost is PRINCIPAL! I want to see accountability! I need advice as to how to proceed and whom I contact on this matter? Does anyone out there have any thoughts? They’re expecting for us to not do anything. They know that for the average Aphrodite client a day off from work is probably worth more that our damaged and missing items.
FYI: It appears that the corporate office is the main plant where Marcos and Jose work. In other words; no one to check and balance these bandits
Tiered of being taking advantage of as a consumer,
Opened to advice and suggestions,

This is the Dj from the original post. I sent a fax to the corporate headquaters cc'ing Marcos. He quickly responded. I think I got the # from a NYC government site. I called the plant and got Marcos' #. The # I received from the NYC site got bounced...I think. But the fax cc'ing Marcos got to him and he immediately called.

If we got rid of the projects, maybe Aprhodite cleaners would start treating its customers like customers in any other neighborhood!!!

These cleaners (the one on 117th) suck!!! The first time, they said they would deliver (down the street, no less) and they didn't. I had to call them for days to find out where my clothes were. And yet, I went back (so shame on me). I dropped off my clothes and this time, delivery was on time (after they ask you if you want your clothes like 5 days after you drop them off and you have to pretty much beg for a 2-day turn around), but they kept a sweater, which they didn't "find" until two weeks later!!! I WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN! THEY ARE THE ABSOLUTE WORST. The customer service is also appalling. They never apologize for anything and try to make it look like it's your fault.
I now go to Marcel Cleaners (on 115th and FDBlvd). They are SO much nicer, faster, efficient, and the clothes are cleaned really well. The tailoring is also top-notch there.

I dropped off my clothes to the cleaners on 94th Street in May and when I went to pick them up and the end of the week the store had closed and all the clothes had been removed. I gave them all of my dry cleaning since I was going away for the summer and wanted it to be done before I departed. I called the warehouse number and was unable to resolve anything over that weekend. Most importantly, I had a wedding to go to that weekend and was forced to go buy a new $400 suit since Aphrodite had stolen my clothing. It is now the end of September and I have been going back and forth with Marcos since May because they returned all of my clothing except for 6 pairs of dress pants. Marcos agreed to send me a check for $400 but I have yet to receive anything. BIG SURPRISE

You guys should try Lifestyle Cleaners. It is amazing!!! My friend who lives in Brooklyn recommended the place to me. It's a delivery and drop-off service that picks up laundry and dry cleaning anywhere in the city and drops it off to your apartment. The quality is phenomenal and soooooo fast, and their prices are amazing. The delivery fee is $2.00 but you don't have to have a minimum for them to pick it up. I used to pay 1.09 per pound. They charge .90 cents a pound. They're so nice too, they gave me a 15% discount when their driver was running late.
