Over 80 Brands Of Pet Foods Recalled, At Least 10 Pets Dead

Cimbi_Toilet-PaperBathrobe.jpgGothamist today reports that pet food company Menu Foods is recalling over 80 brands it produces, including Iams and Eukanuba canned and foil pouch products. Pet owners are warning that their animals have been vomiting and suffering kidney failure. At least ten pet deaths have been reported so far.

Gothamist commenters tell of dehydration and long, expensive vet visits. One commenter recalls how her infant daughter had been notorious for getting into the cat food until recently and asks "I wonder how many other little kids have had a bite of this poison, or how many broke senior citizens for that matter..."

To see a list of all recalled products, visit the Menu Foods website. Additionally, the company designated two phone numbers that pet owners can call for information: (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708. If calling, be warned, a commenter on Gothamist tells of being on hold for more than a half an hour.

I was hoping you'd heard about this...fortunately kitty doesn't eat any of those brands but my friend's cat did and I suspect poor Bob may be one of the 10 victims since he passed away on Tuesday of this past week.

Berry- That's horrible.

Turns out Bob had been sick before the recall. Still very sad.

Berry, ask your friend what kind of food the kitty was eating. it's being reported that Menu Foods knew as early as December that there was a problem but didn't test their foods until Feb. 20-28, whereupon 1 in 10 of their test animals died after eating the food. Menu Foods did not announce the recall until this past Friday. I have been reading story after story of pets who have died of renal failure after eating the foods on the recall. Ugh. So horribly sad. :(
