For The Stroller Set: Grandma's Place Toy Store

For those of you with conventional children, newly-opened Grandma's Place on 120th and Lenox is there to produce all the "IWANTIWANTIWANT" outbursts you can handle.
It even offers temptations for those with unconventional children, as per this conversation Cheryl and I had when walking past:
Me: Ouuu, a toy store. Let's stop in.
Cheryl: No, I would feel compelled to buy Cimbi something.
Me: No, don't worry; it's a store for children. Cimbi is a small house cat.
Cheryl: I know, but she is still like a child to me.

Stroller Set is right. Kids able to walk are watched like a hawk, and everything is hands-off. It's like being in grandma's house for real - if grandma has precious heirlooms. There's also a filled bookshelf toward the rear wall. Guess what? Don't touch any of the books there.

I've been to Gradma's Place a number of times and found the staff welcoming and helpful.

My daughter has been entertained, allowed to roam free and touch everything she sees. They even let her come play behind the counter while I browsed. It's a wonderful place - started by a retired teacher who wanted to provide a resource of educational toys and books for her community. Their stock is amazing and their prices are very reasonable. I just love it.

I've been there a few times with my 4-year-old, and each time they have been very welcoming and very open to him playing with the toys and opening all the books. In fact, each time we've been there, our purpose has been to buy a gift for someone else and he has wound up without anything for himself, but each time he has had such a nice time there that he has not been upset about that by the time we left. The toys are the sort that I like -- generally not the battery-powered noisy junk that makes most toystores (and many kids' homes) so unpleasant, but instead, hands-on items that engage a kid's imagination. Also, the prices are very reasonable -- the stock includes many items priced at about $5 that are quite entertaining and engaging. I consider that store to be one of the best things to arrive in the neighborhood in the past couple of years.

Grandma's Place is truly amazing. Founded by a full-time teacher, the store is a warm, welcoming, friendly place where children are free to explore spinning tops, kites, wind-up toys, educational board games, dolls & dollhouses, stuffed animals & puppets, a very nice collection of multicultural and educational books and coloring books and more. It is well worth the trip to stop by and see what Grandma's Place is all about.
