Harlem Hound: Uller

This six-week old Burmese Mountain Dog looks and acts just like a giant stuffed animal. A word of caution to anyone who meets Uller on the street- any time spent in his presence will make you want one.

Sorry to be a stickler, but the breed name is "Bernese" (say "bare-knees") mountain dog, from the canton of Bern, Switzerland (Burmese is a cat ;-). Yes, they do grow up big--we've had four that ranged 110-145 lb, but they are extremely calm, gentle dogs, so there's none of the "bull in a china shop" symdrome, and they LOVE children. Unfortunately, they've become very expensive (at least on my budget): 1989-$400, 1995-$600, 1998-$1000, 2003-$1200, and our breeder (Oregon) is among the cheapest I've found. they are also not terribly long lived, often succumbing to a variety of cancers at 6-10 years of age. They are also very "needy" toward their owners--somebody should be home most of every day to avoid behavior problems.
That said, I can't recommend the breed enough.
