Animal General Looking For Space In South Harlem
This is the type of pet-rification Harlem Fur was born to post on.
Animal General called me recently not to check up on Cimbi, as they do even for their healthy patients, but to ask if I knew of storefront space in South Harlem for an expansion of their practice. I don't, but maybe someone reading this does know of 1,700 animal-friendly sq feet in the nabe.
You may remember that back in May I was bemoaning the lack of veterinary services in South Harlem. After seeing long lines each day the Petland on 117th Street and Lenox Ave held a Vet My Pet event, I checked Switchboard.com for vets in the area to see what options are available. Here is what I found:
For the vets closest to us, Switchboard returned Henry M. Fierman, DVM at 250 W 108th St (212-864-3631), who is 1.5 miles to the South, the 145th Street Animal Hospital at 454 W 145th St (212-234-8087), which is 1.8 miles to the North, and Oliver's Dog & Cat Clinic at 2232 1st Ave (212-348-7070), which is 1.6 miles East... This leaves a huge section of Central Harlem without a vet close by.
Cheryl and I take Cimbi to Animal General at 87th and Columbus, which is 2 miles away- not that much further away than the other vets. Also, being that it is close to the 1/9 stop at 86th Street, it is much easier to get to than vets requiring cross-town travel.
But more than travel convenience brings us to Animal General. After the first visit, Cheryl and I knew that the doctors and clients at Animal General really care about pets. As we were waiting for Cimbi to have her first check-up, a woman in the lobby explained that a beloved neighborhood dog was in for surgery, and residents from the block like her were stopping by at different times to keep the pooch company. I thought, 'why can't we have a place like this in our neighborhood?' Now we soon will.

That's great. I had to take my kitty all the way downtown on the eastside for emergency vet care. Hopefully they will offer that service.

there's "community" space advertised in that new building on 124th on the north side of marcus garvey. not sure if they are pet friendly, but probably worth a try. prudential/elliman is the listing agent.

Good vet care one of my more serious concerns re: our eventual move uptown. Right now game plan is to hop A/C or 1/9 to Canal and our present Tribeca/Soho Vet group but with 20 Persians of varying ages and health concerns it would be nice to have somebody trusted closer to hand.

Try 1400 5th Ave (Btw 115th/116th). They have an upstairs/downstairs commercial space that seems to be available.

I love Animal General. Roxie and I have been going since she was just a wee pup. And it's the same location. All of the vets at AG are so very caring and knowledgeable. I love that they have playtime/socialization for young puppies at their facility on certain nights and a full treat jar to boot.

FYI - You may have already received a response from my assiciate, Dr. Ina Obernesser, but here is the scoop on our upcoming opening in South Harlem...
We are "Uptown Veterinary Associates", Dr. Ina Obernesser and Dr. Mary Mansfield. We have secured a space on 112th Street just East of Fredrick Douglas Blvd. and we will be opening late this summer! We are looking forward to serving this great up-and-coming community!

Animal General continues to look for space in Central Harlem. We are having trouble finding a space large enough to allow us to provide the same award-winning service that we provide at our Columbus Avenue location. Please continue to keep an eye out for us. Our goal is to provide veterinary care for all the pets of Harlem - newly arrived and long established. Anyone currently in need of veterinary care please call us for transportation assistance to our Columbus Avenue/87th Street location. 212-501-9600

I take my dog and cat to Riverside Animal Hospital at 250 W. 108th Street-it replaced Dr. Fierman's practice almost 3 years ago. (I think he moved). Riverside is an amazing practice with a terrific people who work there. The vets are great and they are open 7 days a week with lots of early morning and late night hours. They have treats too!

We bring our dog and cat to Riverside on 108th St. (where Fierman's practice used to be). Its totally renovated, has an amazing loving staff with great vets-and they see patients 7 days a week. They have some late and early hours and have this great adoption service (we got our fabulous kitten from them).

I have to say Dr. Fierman is a wonderful doctor. The doctor and his great staff really helped me out when my little girl needed care. I don't think I have ever encounter any doctor quite like Dr. Fierman. He truly cares about the cats & dogs that he treats. And his staff are remarkable professionals that will take the time to explain anything to you. His office unlike most veterinary care places actually take the time to examine your pet and address any concerns that you may have. He would never rush you out the door just so he can see as many patients as he can. I highly recommend his services to anyone who truly loves their cat or dog and sees them as a family member.

I live in this changing neighborhood of SOHA. I take my cats to Animal General on 89th street. While I certainly cannot deny their expertise, the true love for animals, and my ability to feel that my babies are in very caring and capable hands, I must admit they cost a small fortune! We have begun having health isuses wtih our oldest, and we really don't know what to do as Animal General is just so expensive. Has anyone visited Uptown Vetinary Associates? I wonder if this is the type of place I would feel safe taking my cats to?
