Reviews: The Centerline, Aphrodite Cleaners
The Centerline
Harlem resident and political moderate Jonathan Funke picked up his blog, The Centerline, this month. Don't worry, it's not focused on Harlem. The Centerline will be a great medium for Jonathan's centrist take on politics.
Jonathan is an all around clean and solid writer, whose jazz reviews I enjoy reading in The New York Press. He set out to write The Centerline early last year, but became sidetracked. "Why?," he writes, "Because - like any political moderate you can point to - I had a job and a life to attend to. That's why 'irate moderates' are so rare." Thankfully, the Lamont / Lieberman Senate race in Connecticut brought him to the keyboard.
The Centerline is a welcomed addition to the Harlem blog roll; it helps illustrate the wide variety of ideas in our neighborhood.
Aphrodite Cleaners
The review is belated, but I have only good things to say about the Aphrodite Cleaners on Lenox and 119th Street.
On their second day open, I dropped off shirts, pants, suits and bedding. To a certain extent, I thought by dropping off so many things I could best judge the cleaners on a variety of items, but more so I just didn't feel like dragging another load of anything to the cleaners in TriBeCa I had been using. My thought was that even if Aphrodite was not the best, at least I didn't have to endure another two 'sweaty arm' subway rides to get a couple of things cleaned.
I did not have to worry. The woman at Aphrodite was courteous, professional, and efficient, and aside from a credit card reader malfunction that was fixed later that day, everything was great. All of the items I dropped off came back clean, smelling good, well pressed, and on time. Even the micro-fiber comforter was completely free of cat hair. (Cimbi took care of that in a matter of hours.) And best of all, they gave me a delivery bag.
I feel that a new era in my life has begun.
Remember, there is also one on 117th between Frederick Douglass Boulevard and Manhattan Avenue.

Comments
We dropped a load off for "wash and fold" last weekend at the Aphrodite on Columbus and 106. They're the same price as the place we usually use (when we don't do it ourselves) and closer. However, the load was late to be washed (the guy had to keep the store open late to finish it) and the folding job just couldn't compare to the place two blocks up. I don't think we'll go back for loads of wash, but might try them for shirts and jackets...

I don't know why you've been going downtown for your laundry. There's been a cleaners on Lenox bwt 121 and 122 for some time.

In all fairness, you are the second person to let me know about the cleaners on 121st and Lenox, and I have not tried them. The first Harlem cleaners I took clothing to gave it back to me reeking of incense. The second cleaners returned a pair of pants with a freshly made hole in the butt. The butt hole made for a slightly comedic exchange between the person behind the counter and I, but resulted in my taking the pants elsewhere to have them repaired at my cost. After that I gave up and started going downtown.

In all fairness just because a store looks nice does not mean you will get the service you want. I droppes off 20 lbs of laundry at the Aphrodite cleaners on 119th and Lenox. They seemed to know what they were doing, but when I came back to pick up my laundry they tried to give me someone elses bag. To make a long story short out of the 20 lbs of clothes I dropped and I only got back 3 lbs!!!! They could not find any of my clothes, they are completely incompetent, and now are refusing to pay for any of the lost items which roughly total $600. The place looks nice, but thats about it.

Hey, I kinda know Jonathon from Billionaires for Bush (yes, JF claims to be a centrist... but... :) ) I don't know if he would remember me, though, but if you see him, tell him Countessa Frei de Marquette says hello.

The newly opened aphrodite cleaners on 148th and Frederick Douglas Blvd. is a complete nightmare! The "owner" of the store is a MONSTER!!!! I had dropped off a coat to be cleaned and the woman I dropped it off with told me to come the next day. When I came to pick it up next day, the MONSTER was degrading a customer for not knowing what colour khaki was. She also explained how she has a lot of "mexicans" working for her and that they don't know the names of certain colours. When my turn came I found out my jacket wasn't there. She blamed the mistake on a worker and proceeded to go into an unneccessary bitch fest about delivery service and when I wanted to ask a question she got upset and called me ignorant for interupting her. That was just the tip of the iceberg, you would not believe the rest. Nobody has ever spoken to me the way she did, especially a new business owner. I was appalled and when I suggested that she was going to get a bad reputation in the neighboorhood she said "Oh yeah, well I'm black, your not."

After reading the comment above I decided to go to the Aprodite on 148th Street. I would agree that the owner is abrasive and she flung around a few curse words, but not a mean manner, that was just her way of talking. She is not the most polished person but she does seem to want to do better so if you have a problem with her you may want to give her pointers. It seems that she just doesn't know any better and may just need a nudge in the right direction.

I had an incident years ago when I lived in DC where the cleaners ruined a pair of white pants. They reimbursed for much less than the price paid and I never did find another pair to replace the ones that were ruined (they were part of an outfit!) Since then I refuse to deal with cleaners that don't clean on their premises. No muss no fuss!

My experience with Aphrodite Organic Cleaners has been dreadful! They shrunk my shirt that clearly stated "Dry Clean Only." For 1 month now I have been trying to speak with the managaer of the store on W. 113 St. *th Ave. He rname is Fatima. One month no response. The attendants barely speak English or maybe they pretend I don't know. But I must now take matters to another level. Any suggestions. Anyone listening. Yes, many folks NOW want to be Harlemmites by opening up fancy stores. I am wondering if anyone thought that they would be servicing an ignorant community?

Aphrodite cleaners is the absolute worst! Is there one thing they can do right? The owners are just in the business for the $$$$$. They do not give a damn about customer service or a job well done. Avoid them like the plague. They will either ruin or lose your stuff!!!

Aphrodite on 117th and Frederick Douglass LOST TWELVE SHIRTS - $650 worth - in early December. After the owner confessed that he had no clue where they were - he said he would pay three shirts immediately. When I presented him with the bill and claim, I got no payment. He referred me to Markos in the head office.
Markos promised $300 immediately in late December. Its March now - I have called and been given the run around every time - its in the mail, I sent it, etc. etc. etc.
I am out $650, twelve shirts I have to replace, and gotten a pretty crappy run around.
DO NOT USE THESE THIEVES.

To everyone disappointed with their experience at Aphrodite Cleaners in Harlem - you are not alone. After some research, it is clear that this is an irresponsible company that looses peoples clothes, damages their goods, and then proceeds to stonewall their customers. I am putting together a class action lawsuit against Aphrodite Cleaners and am looking for others to join. If you have had a bad experience with Aphrodite Cleaners in Harlem, please contact me ASAP.
