On A Cleaner Topic: Both Aphrodite Locations Now Open
Both Central Harlem Aphrodite organic dry cleaners are now open! The location at 304 West 117th Street, between Frederick Douglass and Manhattan Avenues, has been open for at least a week now. More importantly though, the Aphrodite at 169 Lenox Avenue (119th Street) in the Normandie opened Saturday.
I woke up early this morning to make sure I had time to drop off my dry cleaning at the Aphrodite cleaners on Lenox Avenue. Both cleaners have free pick up and delivery, but for the maiden run, I brought my dry cleaning down myself. I cannot tell you how nice it feels to wake up and walk a block and a half to drop off dry cleaning after years of trying any number of work around strategies.
To sweeten the deal, both Aphrodites are offering opening specials. Regular dry cleaning is 30 percent off, dress shirts are 99 cents each, and wash and fold is 80 cents a pound. I dropped off a few regular dry clean items, a couple of shirts, and two comforters. Reviews of each will be out by the week's end.

Yeah, I saw they're doing wash & fold at the location by our place. Their rate is pretty much the same as everyone else and they're a block closer than the place we like -- so our next load is going there. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, Those were the introductory prices at Aphrodite. Now laundered shirts are $2.00 and Dry Cleaning is $6.00 for pants (!), Really crazy overpriced, and when I mentioned it, they said No One else had complained, which I found impossible to believe. They do a good job, though, and it still beats Mr. Yee on 121 and lenox, who tore buttons off the sleeves of all my shirts and then insisted I brought them in like that.....

Aphrodite has the worst customer service of any cleaner in the neighborhood. Since they are a small operation, right next to my apartment building entrance and environmentally friendly, I have given them an 8 month grace period. During this time, they have lost clothing, damaged clothing and frequently forget to deliver my clothes.

Yes, they are often unable to service the scheduled day, do not speak English, are often on the cell phone talking to friends and family and it is very hard to spell clients' names. Looks nice, but's it's been a little depressing. I wish the one on 113th and FDB were at 119th Street.
